Union criticise Government “inspection” as “a diversion from the real issues”

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has criticised the Government for announcing an investigation into so called “serious and persistent” allegations within Avon Fire Service - calling it “a diversion from the real issues.”

Press reports today (1Dec) quote the Home Office as announcing a “full and statutory inspection” into Avon Fire And Rescue Service on the basis of apparent allegations which the Union understands to be years old and been previously dismissed on several occasions. The inspection has been announced at the same time as Avon Fire & Rescue Service are undertaking a consultation into serious frontline cuts following a 21% budget cut forced onto them by the Government.

Criticising the announcement of the investigation, Avon FBU chair Gary Spindler said “the Governments announcement of this inspection is a diversion from the real issue effecting Avon Fire Service, which is serious and dangerous central Government budget cuts. We are currently fighting against dangerous cuts to our frontline service, all of which have been brought about by this Government slashing the Fire Service budget. The Government should be listening to our serious professional concerns about the impact of their budget cuts instead of getting involved in political shenanigans about years old allegations which have been dealt with on numerous occasions. This announcement is a diversion from the real dangers facing our Fire & Rescue Service, which are devastating Government budget cuts”.
