Officers National Committee

The Officers’ National Committee advises the Executive Council on matters affecting the conditions of
employment of members of the Union of the role of Watch Manager and above and the negotiations attaching thereto. It is responsible for advising the Executive Council on the organisation and recruitment of officers into the Union.

It comprises of one member of station officer rank or above from each of the Union’s 13 regions, a chair and a secretary. The member from each region is elected by the officer members in the region. The national chair and secretary is elected by officer members in line with the Union rulebook. It can, subject to the approval of the Executive Council, elect members to serve in a capacity advisory to the Executive Council upon the national
negotiating bodies concerned with officers’ conditions of employment.

Regional Representative

The main role of Regional Officer Rep is to advise your Regional Committee on Officer issues, both locally and nationally and to represent your Regional Committee on the Officers National Committee. They will also co-ordinate the activities of the Brigade Officer reps within the South West, encouraging the development of Brigade Officer reps, offering
guidance and mentoring wherever possible.

Brigade Officer Rep

The Brigade Officer Rep is elected from Officer members within a specific Brigade. A Brigade Rep organises
and co-ordinates any meetings/activities within the brigade primarily involving Officer member’s. Your Brigade Secretary and Regional Officer Representative can advise you on how to do this.

You must also ensure that you are conversant with the both the objectives and rules of the Fire Brigades Union.

Responsibilities

Attend Brigade Committee Meetings. The Brigade Officer rep has full voting rights at this meeting representing the views/perspective of Officer members, and importantly advising the Brigade Committee of issues affecting Officer members.

Attend Regional Officer meetings – you are entitled to a vote on this committee. Report back to your Brigade Officer members with information from these meetings.

Encourage networking – perhaps organise an event/meeting for your Brigade, think about inviting Brigade/Regional/National Officials to discuss specific issues. Your Brigade Secretary can advise you on planning/organising meetings including obtaining the necessary permissions including the approval of travelling expenses should they be required.

Encourage communication – write and talk to members on a regular basis, not just when a specific issue arises.

The Annual General Meeting of Officer members which is held in November, normally at Wortley Hall, near
Sheffield, allows for Officer members to attend as delegates and you are strongly advised to consider attending.
